Aerospace and defence contractors carry backlogs measured in years, which gives the industry revenue visibility that almost nothing else in the market offers. Government procurement runs on multi-year programmes, so the near-term question is rarely whether the revenue will arrive and usually whether it can be delivered at the assumed cost.
That makes contract structure central. Fixed-price development work places cost overruns on the contractor, and a single troubled programme can absorb the profit from several healthy ones. Cost-plus work removes that risk but caps the margin. The commercial aerospace side follows a different cycle entirely, driven by airline fleet orders rather than by defence appropriations.
