What defines the Industrials sector

Industrials covers companies that build, move or maintain physical things: aircraft and defence systems, freight and logistics networks, electrical equipment, construction machinery and the airlines themselves. Most of them sell to other businesses or to governments rather than to consumers.

The useful characteristic of the sector is that a large part of future revenue is already contracted. Aerospace and defence companies report a backlog measured in years, and the ratio of new orders to current shipments gives a forward reading that few other sectors provide. Airlines are the exception within the group: they sell a perishable product with no backlog at all, carry a fixed cost base that flies whether the seats are sold or not, and are therefore closer in behaviour to consumer cyclicals than to the rest of the sector they sit in.

What actually moves Industrials stocks

Backlog and book-to-bill

Orders received against products delivered is the closest thing to a forward indicator in public reporting. A ratio persistently below one means the backlog is being consumed rather than replaced.

Government budgets

Defence revenue is a function of appropriations and procurement schedules, which follow a political timetable and not the economic cycle.

Fuel and freight rates

Airlines and logistics operators face input costs set in commodity markets and passed on to customers only with a lag, if at all.

Fixed cost absorption

Manufacturing margins depend on running plants near capacity. Utilisation, not pricing, usually explains the margin change.
