Hardware makers assemble and sell physical systems — servers, storage, networking gear and devices — usually from components they buy rather than make. Gross margins are structurally thin because much of the value sits in the components, and the difference between a good and a bad quarter is often supply chain execution rather than demand.
The recurring strategic problem in the group is commoditisation. Once a category becomes standardised, competition moves to price and margin compresses toward the cost of assembly, which is why the more durable businesses here attach software, services or support contracts to the box and report those separately.
