Semiconductor companies split into two structurally different models. Fabless designers own intellectual property and outsource manufacturing, which keeps capital requirements low and gross margins high but leaves them dependent on foundry capacity they do not control. Integrated device manufacturers own their fabs, which costs billions in continuous capital expenditure and turns the business into a fixed-cost one where utilisation drives margin.
Both models sit on top of an inventory cycle. Chips are sold to distributors and manufacturers who hold buffer stock, and when those buyers decide their stock is too high they stop ordering entirely rather than ordering slightly less. The result is a revenue series far more volatile than end demand for the devices the chips go into.
